Civics

Civics, the new book by photographer William Meyers, offers a sweeping 25-year visual record of New York City as a microcosm of America, capturing the everyday acts of civic engagement, public service, and neighborly support that sustain the democratic fabric of the nation. Its release this summer coincides with the United States’ 250th anniversary, offering a timely reflection at shared civic life in the context of heightened political and social tensions. Accompanied by an afterword from journalist Nicole Gelinas, which situates the photographs within the wider context of urban policy and civic engagement, Civics is a visually striking and deeply human celebration of the ordinary acts that sustain democratic life.

Outer Boroughs: New York Beyond Manhattan

Outer Boroughs: New York Beyond Manhattan continues the tradition — actually the several traditions — of photography in New York City. My predecessors worked almost entirely in Manhattan, but I worked in the other four boroughs — Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Most of my pictures were taken on anonymous streets where the people of the place live and go about their business; they represent the quotidian, not the spectacular; they are the outer boroughs of the spirit as well as of the physical city. My work is not concerned with documentation, the way things look, but with “thusness” — the feel of a place at a particular moment. Each image represents a certain time in a certain part of a certain city where, I have found, even in unlikely neighborhoods there are occasions for beauty. — WM
